Chapter Seven

When Curtis refused to come back to the house with them, they ensured that he would be extra-vigilant. Anything at all suspicious, he was to contact Pop or Christie immediately.

As they drove home, Christie expressed her concern. “Pop, this is serious. First, I believe they tried to kill Curtis by digging that hole and setting up that rock cairn. Anyone who would have tripped would have landed on the rock and could have been killed outright. Now this. I don’t like Nick or Erik, but I can’t see them do something like this. We need to find out where they were on the night Kurt was murdered.”

“Agree. How do you propose to do that?”

“Well, as much as I hate to, I could go down to the Websters and listen to what they have to say about selling our property. That would give me an excuse to ask questions about Erik and Nick and thoughts about his place.”

“I dunno. I’m not crazy on you getting mixed up with those folk if they had something to do with it. Maybe I should come along with you.”

“No. They know you’re set against it. I can make out more that I’ve been considering it and how I might convince you.”

Pop rubbed his scraggly beard, the scratching sound loud in the quiet. “Okay, but only to help Curtis. I don’t want to have to come up there and—”

“I’ll be careful. Do you know if Erik and Nick are still here? Last I heard, I thought they were headed back to Dallas.”

“No, they’re still here. I’ve seen Nick’s Mercedes when I’ve gone into town for supplies.” He wiped down his mustache. “Also, Curtis has to get the other horses back. They’re bringing them to our place.” He gazed at Christie and held up his hands. “I know. I know. It’s a lot of work. But if we need to, we can hire some kids from 4H to help.”

“I certainly understand wanting to help Curtis, but I still can’t believe he didn’t have insurance.”

“I guess he didn’t think about it. He just has insurance on the house.”

Christie turned off the truck ignition and sat back. “What? Pop, I thought you said he didn’t have any insurance.”

“Turns out, he does. It’s an older policy that just comes out of his bank account automatically. His house is paid off, so I guess he forgot about it. But it’s just for the house.”

“We need to check it out because it’s usually outbuildings, too, which would mean enough money to rebuild his barn. Then his horses could be brought back there. Though, I don’t know if Curtis can care for them either.”

Pop patted her hand. “One thing at a time, girly.” He swung out of the truck, then turned around. “Now, let’s think of something better like when we can start cutting wood for your house. Looking forward to getting my girl her own place and setting down roots.”

She climbed out of the cab and went around the truck. “You’re just wanting me out of the house.
